IMAP E-Mail is a more advanced solution for E-Mail hosting. IMAP E-Mail is stored on the server and stays on the server until it is deleted by the user. IMAP can be used by E-Mail viewers such as Outlook, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird. IMAP downloads a copy to the local computer but keeps the E-Mail on the server. This allows for the E-Mail backup process to be done at the local computer or at the server to reduce user interaction and productivity time. IMAP also allows you to link your E-Mail from your desktop to a mobile phone such as an IPhone, Windows Mobile Phone, or a Blackberry.
Microsoft Exchange is one of the leading E-Mail hosting solutions. Microsoft Exchange is just like IMAP but it also incorporates Calendars, Tasks, and Contacts. Only Outlook and Entourage are fully supported by Microsoft.
